The Mentor Experience

It all starts with a heart for the foster kids, then getting connected with the right people. Initially you attend an orientation when you learn more about the program and the required commitment. Still being solid out you fill out the application and have an interview with one of the Core staff. Afterwards you attend the mandatory County of San Diego training, you get your fingerprints taken and they run a background check. Next you have an interview with the County when you discuss your likes, dislikes and activities you are interested in. After the interview you wait for a call from the staff to tell you about a few kids interested in having a mentor. You select one and set-up a meeting. Then the fun begins!

At your first meeting nervous excitement fills the air. You meet your mentee with your interviewer from the County (or another person from the program). You do some ice breakers, introduce yourselves and generally get an idea about each other. After that you contact your mentee individually to set-up times to see each other. Then you're off and running!
